"A
FUNHOUSE MIRROR'S ANSWER TO JAMES BOND!"
--Ailurophile
original French title DOCTEUR JUSTICE (Doctor
Justice)
director Christian-Jaque
starring John Phillip Law · Nathalie Delon · Paul Naschy
· Gert Froebe · Eduardo Fajardo
Based
on the popular Euro manga [comic book] by Jean Ollivier and Carlo Marcello,
this is a glossy, supersized actioner that rivals the best of the James
Bond adventures. John Phillip Law plays Dr Justice, a superhero
physician with the World Health Organization. He is a swimming champion,
philosopher, karate expert and - of course - a medical doctor who investigates
the activities of a wickedly nefarious criminal portrayed menacingly
by Gert Froebe [legendary James Bond villain, Mr Goldfinger
himself]. For this film, Froebe is not attempting to rob Ft Knox as
he did in the Bond classic, but rather he is - somehow - stealing the
"black gold" [millions of gallons of oil] from tankers
as they journey across the Atlantic. It seems to have something to do
with raising money for a sinister genocide plan to curb the population
of the Third World.
It's
a dream cast including not only the aforementioned John Phillip Law
(DANGER!
DIABOLIK!) and Gert Froebe, but also Nathalie Delon (popular
Euro actress and wife of playboy/actor Alain Delon), Eduardo Fajardo
(the oily villain from many Spaghetti Westerns) and Paul Naschy (the
Spanish horror superstar, who had just made DRAGONFLY
FOR EACH CORPSE and NIGHT
OF THE HOWLING BEAST earlier the same year). The movie was directed
by Christian-Jaque, the legendary avant-garde French filmmaker, responsible
for 80+ movies before his death from a heart attack in 1994. He is probably
best known, in the United States, for the Spaghetti Western with Brigitte
Bardot and Claudia Cardinale, FRENCHIE
KING.
