Most
cult fans know about this film, but few have actually seen it. Here
is the second movie Russ Meyer made for Twentieth Century Fox. Even
though his previous film, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, was
a huge success, the executives were embarrassed by it and the resulting
X rating. So, after its run, they gave this project to Russ in an attempt
to 'clean up his act' and make something more respectable. He
tried. But ultimately he couldn't take 'Russ Meyer' out of the
equation. The movie failed. And Russ Meyer left Fox and went back to
successly making independent 'Russ Meyer' films.
Based
on a bestselling book by Irving Wallace, the story begins, when vice
cops arrest the manager of a bookstore for selling The Seven Minutes,
a book they considered obscene. However, the prosecutor and his friends
aren't interested in pursuing the case. Times have changed and the crime
is only a misdemeanor. But everything turns dark for the bookseller,
when a politician's son is accused of rape after 'being incited by
the steamy book.' The District Attorney agrees to blame the book
for the sexual assault and take everything to court.
In
a 1976 interview, Russ Meyer said: "I think it is a good flick.
Just wrong for me. Russ Meyer can't spend 45 minutes in a courtroom.
That's not what my audience wants. Maybe it would have been a success
if I had used a pseudonym."
