This
Chinese movie is a liberal dose of The Martian mixed with
Godzilla and Alien. An international research mission
on the surface of Mars is caught off guard by a meteor shower, which -
in turn- causes a superstorm [actually a flying monster, a mixture of
a whale and Godzilla]. The crew rushes to escape the planet before their
ship is destroyed. Once they manage to pull from the atmosphere, they
send a distress call which is confirmed by a Chinese research vessel.
However, the crew and rescue ship is soon harassed by 'alien' type
monsters.
The model work and
CGI effects from female director Na Lim is quite good despite the derivative
popcorn movie script. Overall, this is a major step forward for Chinese
SciFi creature features. It's the first Beijing production for director
Na Lim. She was educated at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles,
graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree. After working as cinematographer
for various Hollywood genre films [including Insidious (2018)],
she left the States for a position with producer Hu Xiaohong in China.
