Most are directed
by Lau Cheng Wei [Ricky Lau]. Lam Ching Ying plays the pivotal Taoist
Priest role. Each movie falls into the "Weird Asia"
category, essentially a mesh of horror, fantasy, comedy and martial
arts. These films are the best introduction to this genre. The entire
series is incredible, a perfect blend of slapstick physical comedy,
sexual innuendos, traditional fantasy, hopping vampires, loathsome zombies,
one liners, martial arts, and comradery.
The MR VAMPIRE series is genuinely funny, but never in the campy 'so
bad it's good' way.
These are surprisingly smart movies. The fight scenes [choregraphed
by star Lam Ching Ying] are good,
often amusing, but are not the focus of the film.
  
Lam
Ching Ying is most always the chief vampire-busting monk [sometimes known
as the 'one eye-brow priest'].
Before these films, he worked years as a martial arts stunt director and
coach for Shaw Bros and Golden Harvest.
He was the personal assistant to Bruce Lee, and later joined Sammo Hung's
stunt team.
Lam Ching Ying became an 'overnight sensation' (ten years later) with
his 'Master Gau' role
in the first MR VAMPIRE in 1985. Sadly, Mr Lam died from liver cancer
in November 1997 at the age of 44.
These films also starred many other actors who have since become household
names,
from Moon Lee to Yuen Biao, from Loletta Lee to Billy Chow.
