original Korean title: KIM BOK-NAM SALINSAGEONUI JEONMAL [The Whole Story of Kim Bok-nam's Murder Case]

This
award-winning debut film from
Jang Cheol-Soo [Best Film and Best New Director Korean
Grand Bell Awards and Critics Award, Cannes Film Festival] is
in the same league as other Korean masterpieces like OLD
BOY, THE
ILSE andI
SAW THE DEVIL. It is important while being very disturbing.
Here is a film that crosses the borders of drama and horror with singular
intensity.
Kim
Bok-nam is a young woman living on a small, isolated island off the
coast of South Korea called Moodo. She is horribly mistreated, abused
and enslaved by her husband. Bok-nam is often beaten and forced to have
sex with her husband's retarded brother. She is also treated like an
animal by the other people on the island. However the movie doesn't
open with Kim Bok-nam; rather it starts with Hae-won, another girl who
was born on that island but now is a 'modern woman' living in Seoul.
She decides to take a short vacation from her bank job and visit the
isle and her old friend Bok-nam. The tension builds slowly from the
moment Hae-won arrives on Moodo and crescendos into an unexpected [and
hideously unpleasant] roller coaster of emotion.
